Faces of Vietnam

Faces of Vietnam - Photography by Parvez Shaikh
Faces of Vietnam is a collection of some of my favorite portraits and street photos I took in different parts of Vietnam.

After spending a month in Malaysia, I reached Vietnam where I spent about a month in Ho Chi Minh City, Da Lat, Hoi An, Hue, and Hanoi. I spent this time enjoying bowls of Phò, drinking different coffees, visiting temples, and wandering around the streets.

Faces of Vietnam is a photo series showcasing some of my favourite pictures I clicked in different parts of Vietnam. It’s also my way of saying thank you to the people of Vietnam for the great hospitality which made my trip memorable.

Most photographs in this series were taken in Hoi An — one of my favourite places in Vietnam — where locals were more camera-friendly.

An Old Lady in Hoi An

Probably one of the most recognisable faces in Hoi An. Despite her age, she is full of energy and offers boat rides across the river.

Before taking these photographs, I observed this lady from a distance. She was trying to fix a small binocular she had found somewhere. I helped her fix it and she was happy with the result!

Chinese Tourists, Hoi An

“Where do you live in Vietnam?” I asked these girls after taking this picture. “We aren’t from Vietnam. We are from China,” said one of the girls. I couldn’t tell the difference thanks to their clothes, clearly.

Osmar K Yen, Da Lat

I met Osmar at my hostel in Da Lat. We were talking about music and he asked me if I would like to join him to a pub where they played live music. I joined him that night and for the next two days, he took me for a ride across the town on his classic Honda motorbike.

Captured this “boat woman” by hanging on a bridge in Hoi An.
