About Sassoon Docks

Built in 1875, Sassoon Docks is one of the oldest and largest fish markets in Mumbai that serves as a vital hub for the city’s fishing industry. It’s not just a bustling fish market; it’s a cultural and historical landmark that has stood the test of time.

Stretching along the vibrant coastline of Colaba, Sassoon Docks is a sensory feast, where the aroma of freshly caught seafood mingles with the sights and sounds of fisherfolk at work.

Beyond its economic significance, Sassoon Docks is a melting pot of cultures, where people from diverse backgrounds come together in pursuit of livelihood and sustenance.

Its historic charm and lively atmosphere make Sassoon Docks a must-visit destination for locals and tourists alike, offering a glimpse into the heart and soul of Mumbai’s coastal life.

What to Expect at the Photo Walk?

Meeting soon after sunrise, we will be observing and photographing the changing light as the sun climbs up. As the day unfolds, we will get to observe boats returning to the shore with their catch. People are seen sorting out the fish on boats and throwing baskets over to the dock where it’s ready to be caught. There are business people auctioning off their catch, local fish sellers carrying fish in baskets over their head and much more to see and photograph.

Sassoon Docks presents ample opportunities for candid street photography as well as possibilities for posed portraits of the fisherfolk. Other elements that will catch your attention are colours and patterns seen on the clothes worn by women.

Participants will get introduced to candid nature of street photography. I will be guiding you through and help you challenge your perspective. At the end of the walk, you should gain confidence photographing in the streets and most importantly, you will have plenty of memories to take back in addition to photographs.

The Sassoon Docks photowalk is open for everyone including amateurs, enthusiasts, and professionals.
