A Man Called Sabri
On a night walk during Durga Puja in Kolkata, I notice this man sitting on the sidewalk, preparing to smoke a chillum. As I squat down near him, he tell me his name. I forgot the first name, but the last name "Sabri" stuck with me. He is related to the famous qawwali performers Sabri Brothers, he said and prepares to sing a qawwali for me. The picture was taken as Sabri sings along a qawwali being played on his broken music player as he strums his guitar. -
Men in Khumbharwada, Dharavi, Mumbai
Apart from being known as the largest slum in the world, Mumbai's Dharavi boasts underlying industries like pottery and leather. Kumbharwada or pottery village is a thriving hub of craftsmanship where for generations, potters have carried on the tradition of creating beautiful pottery out of clay. This photograph depicts men bringing raw materials for pottery from a nearby road as trucks can not pass through Dharavi's narrow lanes.
